The Small Things

Sep 11, 2022

"We are still children, but we have lost our freedom. The freedom we are looking for is the freedom to be ourselves, to express ourselves. But if we look at our lives we will see that most of the time we do things just to please others, just to be accepted by others, rather than living our lives to please ourselves."

                                                            -Don Miguel Ruiz

What do you think about what Don Miguel Ruiz says in the above quote?

Does this ring true for you?

I wonder, do you live your life and make choices based on what your body feels it needs/wants? On what is truly in your highest? Or do you live your life making choices and doing what you think you should be doing?

Maybe you don't know what you need or what is truly in your highest...

Maybe you don't feel you have a choice in the matter...

Maybe you are just making it through your days...

This is ok. I understand.

Most of us are taught to live our lives fairly disconnected from our bodies and the wisdom that comes from living being connected to and understanding the messages from all parts of ourselves. We are taught that life is supposed to look a certain way.

That was me for most of my life.

Have you ever wondered if life could be different?

Have you ever fantasized living your life for yourself? Making decision based on what feels right for you?

I know, this can feel like a fantasy.

But I am here to tell you that when you become more connected with all parts of yourself, your inner wisdom shines through more clearly.

What once felt cloudy can begin to feel more light and airy.  Once on this path you may even find yourself living more in flow, instead of working so incredibly hard for everything and everyone else.

I know this was the case for me. I see the transition and the way life changes for my clients when they also start walking this path.

If this is the case for you, please offer yourself grace.

And start small.

Maybe begin to ask yourself what can you do to begin to bring to yourself a little space. A few moments here and there - just to begin with.

What small little things can do you or bring to yourself that feel good, delightful, joyful, exciting, or restful?

Maybe it is something as simple as taking a few minutes while at the grocery store to buy yourself some pretty flowers and let yourself enjoy their fragrance and beauty in your home...

Maybe it is going outside on a warm sunny day and feeling the sun on your face for a few minutes...

Maybe it is take a bit of time to connect with a friend who you enjoy talking to...

Or maybe it is just being more present as you sit with and cuddle your pet...

I have found working with my Mind-Body Coaching clients and my pelvic physical therapy patients that often trying to make big changes all at once can feel just too daunting. It can stop people in their tracks.

Start with small experiences or things that help you to feel good or feel better.

I call this Resourcing.

I have found that most of us need to bring to ourselves a good amount of resourcing before beginning to make the big changes that deep down we know we need.

And when you start to bring these little things or experiences to yourself, pause, take a few moments and enjoy them.

And you deserve these little joys. These little things or experiences that feel good! Let your body take them in and marinate for just a bit.  Over time, this will help you more than you know!

In Kindness,
Jennifer Chu, MS, PT, WCS, Mind-Body Coach
